Method Books for Guitar
Reading music is the visual understanding of notated rhythm and pitch. It is important to instantly know how the notes on the staff relate to your guitar. Becoming proficient and knowing the notes and fingering is a separate skill all on its own but relates directly to how well a person can read. In other words, if you don't know where F is on your guitar, when the music calls for you to play that note, it will be next to impossible to play.
Understanding How To Sight Read Music
The staff is made up of 5 horizontal lines which create 4 spaces. Each line and space has been assigned a specific pitch. Memorizing the letter names on the staff is the first necessary step of reading music. The second bit of information contained in each note is the length of time a pitch is played. This rhythmic information is essential in understanding how to read music. Even if all the proper notes are played, without the proper rhythm, it's going to sound wrong. The same is true if all the rhythms are executed correctly but the notes are wrong. Each note contains these two types of musical information.
The guitar method books below separate the information so that the brain is able to concentrate completely on one task. Once rhythm and pitch are learned separately, combining the skills together isn't so intimidating and reading music becomes easy.
